The Complete Guide to DAFZ by Business Size (2026): From Sole Proprietors to Regional Headquarters
Marking its 30th anniversary with more than 3,400 companies, Dubai Airport Freezone (DAFZ) serves everyone from sole proprietors to the regional headquarters of listed Japanese companies such as Epson and PILLAR. We explain how to use it by company size, with examples from its community of 63 Japanese companies.
What is DAFZ?
Dubai Airport Freezone (DAFZ) was established in 1996 and is Dubai's second-largest and second-oldest free zone. Built around its location adjacent to Dubai International Airport, it marked its 30th anniversary in 2026.
More than 3,400 companies are based in the zone, with over 20,000 investors and employees. Its trade reached AED 479 billion in 2025 (approximately USD 130 billion), around 15% of Dubai's foreign trade. In addition to an open framework — 100% foreign ownership, free repatriation of profits, and no currency or employment restrictions — a 0% corporate tax rate applies to companies that meet the Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) requirements (see Section 4).

How to use DAFZ, by company size
The real strength of DAFZ lies in the flexibility to choose an office and legal form that fit the size of the business. Below, we set out how it can be used at five different scales, from sole proprietors to regional headquarters.
| Legal form | Overview |
|---|---|
| Branch | Representative presence; no capital requirement |
| PLC | No cap on shareholders; for companies with an eye on an IPO |
| Free zone company | 1–50 shareholders; minimum capital of USD 1 (AED 3.67) |
| Office type | Size and visa quota |
|---|---|
| Smart Office | Per desk |
| Business Boutique | 12–15 m², two visas |
| Premium | 25 m², two visas |
| Premium Plus | 50 m², six visas |
| Industrial warehouse unit | 350 m² plus a 90 m² mezzanine office (annual, renewable lease) |
| DAFZ Industrial Park | 33 buildings (including 10 cold storage units); average 312 m² and 20 visas per unit |
Key tax points
The zone has no currency or employment restrictions, permits 100% foreign ownership and free repatriation of profits, and applies a 0% corporate tax rate to companies that meet the Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) requirements.
The 0% rate applies only to qualifying income. Where a company has sales to the mainland or income from excluded activities, that portion is taxed at 9%. In practice, managing substance requirements and the classification of transactions is central to meeting the QFZP conditions.
Setting up a business is designed to take three steps: choose the licence, choose the legal form, and choose the office. Working through them in this order makes it easier to align with tax and visa requirements. See our practical three-step guide.
Sector ecosystems and support
Machinery (70%) and precious and semi-precious stones (25%) account for more than 95% of trade. By sector, electronics, electrical, computing and ICT is the largest group of companies at 28% (see DAFZ for electronics and ICT), followed by logistics, freight and aerospace at 10% (DAFZ for logistics and trade) and consulting, business development and investment at 7% — a cluster that spans industries.
The Halal Trade & Marketing Center, which provides halal certification and compliance advice, and Tradeling — a B2B marketplace with more than 400,000 registered buyers, over 100,000 sellers and more than 7 million SKUs (revenue above USD 600 million in 2025) — also operate as ecosystems that originated in DAFZ. See cross-border business with Tradeling and the Halal Trade Center.
DAFZ is a free zone that can be used at any scale, from sole proprietors to large and mid-sized companies such as Epson and PILLAR. As its community of 63 Japanese companies shows, it combines location, regulation and practical support, and deserves consideration as a base for expansion into the Middle East and Africa. The best legal form, office size and tax design depend on the business and the stage of expansion, so an individual design is essential.
